Philadelphia Youth Basketball Is Building a $50 Million Career Center Next to Its Nicetown Gym
The 40,000 square foot Generator breaks ground in fall 2027 with Temple, Jefferson Health and Hanwha Philly Shipyard already signed on as partners.
Philadelphia Youth Basketball CEO Kenny Holdsman announced plans for a $50 million, 40,000 square foot workforce development center, called The Generator of Career Development and Economic Opportunity, built next to PYB's existing Alan Horwitz Sixth Man Center at 4250 Wissahickon Avenue in Nicetown. The organization has 20% of the budget secured, with Temple University, Jefferson Health, Hanwha Philly Shipyard and the Eastern Atlantic States Carpenters Technical Center already named as partners. Construction starts fall 2027, with an opening targeted for early 2029.
PYB opened the $36 million Sixth Man Center in 2024, funded in part by a $5 million gift from Sixers superfan Alan Horwitz, and now serves about 1,200 youths a year. A second building this size, with a hospital system and a university both attached as partners, turns a youth sports nonprofit into a standing institutional anchor in North Philadelphia rather than a single gym.
Anchors like this pull retail and service tenants toward them well before the ribbon cutting, the same pattern that's stretching the Avenue of the Arts corridor north toward Temple right now. Ground doesn't break until fall 2027, which is exactly the runway to get positioned on parcels near Wissahickon Avenue before Temple and Jefferson Health's involvement puts the neighborhood on more brokers' radar.
